We know it has only been five days since we picked up our GSD (German Shepherd Dog) “Logan”, but we just wanted to write this to you so that anyone who is researching breeders understands why I chose Ravenscroft’s over anyone else. ...continued
Our search to find an appropriate GSD breeder was a lengthy one. It didn’t start with the yellow pages or any breeders annual. It started with the search for knowledge. Never owning a large breed dog, we wanted to be prepared for the task at hand. So we read several books and magazines over a couple of months that gave specific information relating to raising a GSD. Feeling empowered with the information from the material we read, we decided to proceed to the next step and buy one of the annuals to start making some phone calls.
Deciding to leave no stone unturned, I phoned and/or emailed just about every breeder in southern Ontario. Being animals lovers, my wife and I didn’t really care about the long distance charges or the distance we’d have to travel (within reason), we wanted to make sure that our puppy would come from a family that loved their dogs as much as we were going to. When I talked or emailed these breeders, I made it very clear that I was only interested in obtaining information about their practices and if I liked what I heard we could proceed to the next step of visitation. And to be honest, a lot of the responses I received shocked me. My gut feeling was that some of these places were running more as a puppy mill than a loving environment for raising puppies; that is until I came across Ravenscroft’s Kennels.
The first time I spoke to Lynda, she was knowledgeable, kind, friendly and very patient. I think we talked on the phone for more than an hour, and to my surprise, she took the time to answer all of the questions that I threw at her. She even interviewed me, which was a bit of a shocker since no one prior to that had even been interested in what kind of conditions they could possibly be sending a puppy into. At that point, I knew where we were taking the next step.
After the three hour drive, we were greeted warmly by John and Lynda (and 8 six week old pups). We were given a tour of the facilities and we talked, shared information and talked some more. I was totally amazed about with the whole experience: I mean their knowledge and how they ran their facilities. It was quite evident that they loved raising GSDs, and I knew that compassion would be passed down into the puppies that they would raise. Up until the day we came to pick up our puppy, we received weekly updates about the puppy’s conditions and pictures (tons of pictures).
It was an honour and a pleasure to meet John and Lynda, and if it wasn’t for Ravenscroft Kennels, we would still be looking for our GSD today. We did the research and we made the phone calls. We would highly recommend them to anyone. And if there are any doubts, there is 25 pounds of proof sitting at my feet that will convince you.
